CLAUDIA LAU
Represented by C. Gallery, Melbourne
Founder and Director HOUSE EDITIONS
(B. 1996) first explored ceramics while studying communication design at RMIT. Enamoured with the physicality of the craft, she began by making traditional ceramic tableware and has developed her practice to explore the boundaries of scale, form, function and glaze chemistry within the medium.
After completing her degree, Lau went on to gain experience in making tableware in Melbourne as well as expanding her studies locally and abroad, including formative experiences in China’s porcelain capital of Jingdezhen. Today she is informed by her deep knowledge and respect for Japanese material culture and its connection to the natural world. Through this lens Lau marries technical know-how and experimental gambits in glaze composition to breathtaking effect.
Working at the intersection of craft and design. Her design practice is defined by an ongoing investigation into the boundaries of ceramic manipulation. A mixture of production experience, technical classes, material chemistry and theoretical approaches to ceramic practice has informed her investigations.
Straddling both experimentation and the refined, she divides her time between her fine art practice and production studio HOUSE EDITIONS. A ceramic design and production studio focusing on timelessness, relevance and beauty based in Jingdezhen, China. This cultural exchange is where she has developed a deeper connection with the tradition of ceramics and experimental production methods.
